Track day - 1964 Jaguar E-Type

On July 23, 2024, I travelled to Goodwood Motor Circuit as part of my experience towards my Level 3 Diploma in Motorsport. This opportunity allowed me to work with Nigel Greensall and David Gooding.

What I did

Today was about getting David’s confidence back. David recently had a knee operation hence, Nigel helped him with getting used to driving. Specifically, Nigel helped with throttle input throughout the day and the handling of the car. My main responsibility was to prepare the Jaguar E-Type for track performance. Upon arrival, I began with a thorough inspection of the car, checking essential components such as the engine, brakes, suspension, and tyres. I ensured that all fluid levels were optimal and looked for any signs of wear or potential issues.

During the practice sessions, I discussed with the driver about the handling. We, the team, already did the setup back at the workshop. We did the camber angle, toe, caster and tyre pressures. After the first lap, David said the setup was good. In positive ways, each lap, David got his confidence back and Nigel separately discussed areas for improvement. We noted that the E-Type had excellent acceleration, good front end and was good in terms of endurance. Plus, the air intake hose, mounted on the chassis was doing a good job in cooling the brakes.

Throughout the day, I also performed routine maintenance, including tyre pressure checks and brake inspections, to ensure optimal performance. I collaborated closely with the team, sharing insights and helping to create a positive atmosphere. Not just that, but ensuring David was doing well.

Conclusion

Overall, I felt like I stepped up more in comparison to last time. Since the car was setup beforehand and no issues developed, there wasn’t a lot to and the driver felt the setup was great.

I have learnt from the team:

  • Basic setups of the car
  • How driver confidence is key
  • How different the E-type handles around the track
